Remember, when you are trying to muscle test yourself, or someone else, it’s important to not use too much force. What you are trying to do is “sense” the change that is taking place in the body, either strong for “yes” or weak for “no.” Practice using almost no force at all, and see how much easier it is to get the answers! – Dr. Bradley Nelson

One of my favorite muscle testing positions is the elbow on the table and pulling the forearm either forward or back. This is a non-tiring position and allows for easy access while sitting for both myself and the client. Yes, that little bit of pressure is very helpful to remember, too.
Erin, I agree with you completely. I am a small woman and have lost a LOT of upper body strength since having neck surgery in 2005 (before I knew of The Emotion Code). I usually only get a baseline test on a client and then ask if I can act as proxy. This allows me to not tire out myself or my clients, whether they be big muscle bound fellows or elderly folks. I also follow Dr. Brad’s advice and use the lightest amount of pressure possible when acting as proxy.
This is such an important point. I first learned to muscle test as a physical therapist. Those tests gauge how strong a muscle is. Then I made the transition to Applied Kinesiology about 20 years ago. Going from controlled force to listening so to speak for a muscle to “lock” was a huge jump for me. “It´s not a matter of pushing through, but of listening to, the muscles” is a phrase I used in teaching. There is a point at which a muscle locks. Sometimes it´s subtle and sometimes not.
I think perhaps if you feel unsure about your testing, if your thinking to you self “Am I using to much force (common when testing bodybuilder types)” just get a surrogate. It is not worth filling your heart with doubt about your own testing. People seem very understanding if you honestly say “I´m having a hard time testing you let´s do this another way”. Doubt about your testing also is an indicator that your connection to the man upstairs is faltering. A clear connection with the divine has one characteristic I have found – No Doubts. I would love to hear what others think.
