If you’re curious what to expect when you release a trapped emotion, we’d love to share what it’s like! Emotional release is unique, and it can change from person to person – or even from emotion to emotion! However, our practitioners see certain patterns in their clients’ experiences. Understanding those patterns can help you better understand your own feelings and get a better idea of what to expect before, during, and after an energy healing session!
Understanding Trapped Emotions
According to Dr. Bradley Nelson, creator of the Emotion Code®, Body Code®, and Belief Code®, trapped emotions are stuck energy left behind by an emotional experience that isn’t fully processed. When an emotion isn’t processed completely, it can leave emotional energy lodged in the body. This can happen for many different reasons!
The energy then continues to vibrate at the frequency of the original feeling and can attract more of that same vibrational energy.
Think of it like a song that gets stuck in your head. It loops quietly beneath everything else. You may not consciously hear it, but it colors your experience of every other song that plays. Over time, trapped emotions can manifest as unexplained tension, discomfort, anxiousness, or disproportionate emotional reactions.
The Emotion Code identifies these stuck energies and clears them from the body’s energy field, allowing the system to return to a more natural, balanced state.
Here are a few common reasons why an emotion might become stuck, rather than processed and moved through the body:
The experience was too overwhelming to process
When something happens that is really intense emotionally, our bodies and minds can become overwhelmed. The nervous system doesn’t have the capacity to fully process the experience, or it can even shield you from feeling it completely as a means to protect yourself.
The person didn’t feel safe to fully experience the emotion
Emotions often need to be expressed to move through them. Sometimes our environments and the people around us don’t encourage that. For example, if someone grows up in an environment where crying is seen as weakness, anger is punished, or sadness is ignored, those emotions might be suppressed rather than released.
It happened before the person had the tools to process it
This is especially applicable to trapped emotions that occur during childhood. A young child likely doesn’t have the emotional ability to work through fear, abandonment, or grief yet, even if they experience it.
The emotion was experienced repeatedly
A single difficult emotion might move through naturally, but when we experience the same vibration over and over again, it may pile up or occur faster than the body can process it. Think of this as the difference between one stressful day before a project deadline and the experience of feeling stressed at work every single day. One is easy to work through, but the other piles up, overwhelms our system, and can certainly leave behind a lasting mark.
There was a lack of support
It can be easier to process emotions when we share them with others. When we can voice our experience, it helps us to understand what happened and move through those feelings in a healthy, positive way.
The emotion was inherited
Inherited emotions are based on the idea that emotional trauma is passed down through generations. Trapped inherited emotions can come to you from either parent.
Emotional Release: The Physical Experience
Your body may feel a shift from the release of a trapped emotion before your mind even realizes it. During or immediately after an Emotion Code session, you might notice:
- Sensation of warmth spreading through the body
- Tingling in the hands or feet
- Chills
- Yawning
- Joints popping or adjusting
You might feel a sensation of relaxation, as if pressure or tension is loosening. For others, the nervous system’s response is more pronounced: spontaneous trembling or shaking, a rush of heat, goosebumps, or a brief, passing headache. These responses can feel startling if you aren’t expecting them, but they are signs of your system actively processing and releasing what no longer needs to be held. For still others, you might not experience any physical sensations at all. These are all normal experiences!
Emotional Release: The Emotional Experience
Just as the physical experience varies, so does the emotional experience of a release. Some people move through quiet waves of feeling, from a brief sadness to an inexplicable urge to laugh, or peace and clarity.
The intensity of the emotional experience can vary widely, from person to person, but also from emotion to emotion. Some releases feel like a sudden, full-body surge of relief. Others are so subtle that you only notice the shift hours or even days later. Even the subtlest releases can have a huge ripple effect in your life.
Why the Experience Varies
Several factors can influence a person’s experience:
- How long the emotion has been trapped: an emotion lodged for decades may feel different to release than one formed more recently.
- Where in the body it’s lodged: emotions held near the heart center may produce different sensations than those in the digestive system or joints, for example.
- What the emotion is connected to: a trapped emotion could be associated with certain memories or relationships.
- The person’s sensitivity: some people simply have a more sensitive system and react more strongly to clearing trapped emotions.
After Releasing a Trapped Emotion
The days following an Emotion Code session are often when the most meaningful shifts become noticeable. It can be helpful to take some extra time for self-care and rest. Get extra sleep, drink lots of water, and engage in activities that you enjoy and feel restorative, such as a bath or a walk outside.
You may also notice a brief period when emotions feel closer to the surface. This is sometimes called the processing period and can signal that your system is recalibrating. Learn more about the processing period here.
